How do I get started?
  1. Find a club that is local to your home; attend one of their meetings and see if their culture is a good match for you.
  2. You want to look for a club that has an active instruction program.
  3. If you have never flown RC airplanes before see if you can arrange for an instructor to give you a test hop using the instructors plane.
  4. Obtain feedback from the club members on the type of plane, equipment and supplies that are the most reliable.
  5. Join the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA).
  6. Join the local club.
  7. Purchase the recommended plane, equipment and supplies.
  8. Start formal instruction.
How long before I can solo?

This always depends on your;
  • Dedication to practice
  • Your ability to learn the discipline of flying RC airplanes
  • Some solo in three or four days some never make it.
How much will it cost to start in powered R/C flight?

This number can vary depending on the quality of parts that you choose. Here are a few examples:
AMA Membership$  58.00
Fly-A-Ways Membership$  70.00
Good reliable trainer aircraft$150.00
Radio system$150.00
Good reliable engine$100.00
Field equipment$  90.00
Fuel and miscellaneous accessories$  50.00
TOTAL$668.00

Do I have to buy the best?

You certainly always have the choice of substituting any of the recommended items. A word of caution; you get what you pay for... cheap parts are often the root cause of lost airplanes and a frustrated hobbyist

These are the start-up items we recommend.
Flight Instruction

Once we have secured a new field and are able to resume normal flight operations, flight instruction will be reinstated.
